Marjorie Powers Smith, 71, of Savannah, Ga., died April 4 at Hospice House of Savannah from complications following surgery.
Margie was born in 1937 in St. Louis, Mo., to the late John and Verna Powers. She moved to Baltimore in 1940. She graduated from Towson High School in 1955 and Beaver College (now Arcadia University) in 1959, where she was President of the student body her senior year and captain of the field hockey team.
After graduation, she taught biology at Friends School of Baltimore. She later attended Maryland Institute College of Art, where she obtained a degree in Interior Design. In 1987, she formed Powers Smith Limited in Annapolis, a design firm now owned and managed by her son.
She retired to the Landings in Savannah in 2003, where she was involved with St. Peter’s Episcopal Church and enjoyed bridge and extensive traveling.
She is survived by her son, Andrew Smith of Annapolis; her daughter, Stephanie Smith Rice of Annapolis; seven grandchildren, Kaeli, Megan, Keegan and Casey Smith, and Henry Kyd, Rennie and Paige Rice, all of Annapolis; and her brother, Jim Powers of Lutherville.
